NEH SUMMER INSTITUTE CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: American Muslims: History, Culture, and Politics

American Muslims: History, Culture, and Politics: An NEH Summer Institute for College and University Teachers

July 13-31, 2015

George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

This Institute is an intensive study of Muslims in America, their history spanning four centuries of American history and their current emergence into the mainstream of American culture and politics. Two broad questions frame the program: What impact has American culture had in shaping the religious identities of American Muslims and in the creation of a uniquely American Muslim identity? What impact have American Muslims had on the religious, cultural, and political life of the United States? These questions will be explored through the experiences of individuals and communities, using their journeys to illustrate wider trends in the American Muslim population. The goal is to spur greater research and teaching about Islam in America at American colleges and universities.

Application deadline: 2 March 2015.

Spoiler alert: I’m sharing this because I will be one of the Institute instructors. For more information, download this flyer or visit NEH Institute, American Muslims.
